Region 1 Background
The Long Island Chapter was founded in June 1973 and presently consists of almost 600 members. The Chapter's territory consists of portions of Queens County, all of Nassau County and the western Suffolk County. Some of the major fisheries include Nissiquogue River, Connetquot River, Carlls River and Massapequa Creek. Meetings are held 3rd Tuesday of each month at the VFW Hall, 320 S. Broadway, Hicksville, NY.

Activities
Partnerships & alliances include a Carman's River Cleanup with the Art Flick Chapter-TU (Eastern Suffolk County),protection of native brook trout through the Long Island Brook Trout Coalition with NYC and Art Flick Chapters; reintroduction of native brook trout into Milburn Creek with the South Shore Audubon Societyu in Brookside Preserve, Freeport, NY and resource preservation of the headwaters of the Nissequoge through membership in the Hauppauge Springs Coalition. Other Chapter Activities & Projects include an ongoing long-term habitat improvement and stream restoration project on the Carlls River in the Village of Babylon: a very successful "Trout-in-the-Classroom" program at seven high-schools and one elementary school; participation in the annual NYSDEC Region 1 Fall Fishing Festival; two free Casting Clinics each March followed up by an Open House at the March general meeting, an Annual National Conservation Banquet (22nd); several youth Fly Fishing programs, including the start of participation with the Boy Scouts of America as Fly Fishing Merit Badge Counselors and two annual Chapter outings. Awards: Peter Dubno and Boyd Shockley received NYS Council's highest award for their years of conservation fund raising.

The Chapter's Communications program include the monthly newsletter "PAUUMONOK" ( also available by e-mail ) and an E-newsletter ( visit for latest Chapter schedule of activities and meetings) at www.tu.org. The Chapter soon will be launching their new web site www.longislandtu.org. They also maintain a Chapter video library for their members.
